University companies are starting to gain the serious attention of venture capitalists, business angels and seedcorn funders.
61 per cent of all 2005 spin-out companies received venture capital funding. All four SETsquared Partnership universities work with and have agreements with IP Group Plc, delivering significant support for IP commercialisation activities, seed capital finance, and ongoing strategic and financial support for spin out companies to maximise their success.
A study by UNICO, the umbrella organisation for university technology-transfer offices, shows that in the past 3 years alone, 25 UK university spin-out companies have floated on the stock exchange at a value of £1.5 billion.
From excellent research to quality business
University "spin-out" companies - The UK is a world-leader in producing excellent research. The vital key for research-to-business success is to transform discoveries from world-class research into quality profitable business. The universities "Knowledge Transfer" offices provide guidance for spin-outs and licensing. Over the last two years, the SETsquared Partnership universities have floated four companies with a total market capitalisation of more than £160 million.
Local High-Growth Technology Companies
Business incubation - The SETsquared Partnership's five Business Acceleration Centres at the universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton, Surrey and Bath in Swindon have supported more than 200 high-technology start-ups from the local entrepreneurial community with mentoring, professional services and low-cost office space and have helped to raise more than £25 million in early-stage funding.
Consultancy for Established Businesses
Partnering with business to advance innovation - The SETsquared Partnership universities work closely with established businesses to further innovation and solve problems for established companies. Spin-out companies have collaborated with larger corporations including Rolls Royce, Airbus, and Microsoft.
