The Centre for Enterprise & Innovation at the University of Southampton has good general advice on how to get your business going, including writing your business plan and setting up a company, as well as advisory business principles.
When looking for funding, you should consider the viability and attractiveness of your company/product to potential investors. BUBA, the University of Bristol's student run investment company, uses a backbone of questions to allow them to assess funding applications. You may find these useful to enable you to critically examine your idea and highlight possible areas of weakness.
