Consultancy - university experts helping businesses

Staff from the Universities of Bath and Southampton are helping the company, Flight Refueling, to find safer and more effective methods to fuel aeroplanes whilst in the air.

Using your expertise to help businesses solve their problems

As a university researcher or other expert, you have the ability to contribute in the lab and beyond.  Many companies look to universities for help in solving scientific and technological hurdles and to further innovation within their businesses.

Helping companies help themselves: how university staff and postgraduates make the difference

Through various types of consultancy and job placement, university staff and postgraduates give the expertise to allow the companies to become more innovative and to help to solve problems that are limiting company growth.  There are a number of short-term and long-term consultancy and placement options available.

If you are interested in working on a placement or as a consultant to business, do call the relevant business contact at your university to discuss your options.

There are many ways that you could be a consultant.  One well-known successful programme is the Department of Trade and Industry's 'Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.'

What is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership?

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships enable Higher Education Institutions to apply their wealth of knowledge and expertise to important business problems. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are Government funded and enable UK businesses to benefit from the wide range of expertise available in the UK's 'Knowledge Base' - higher education institutions, further education colleges, and private and public sector research organisations and institutes.

A recent project is the three year partnership between Flight Refuelling Ltd and both the University of Bath and University of Southampton to develop analytical and numerical models of aerial refuelling hose characteristics with the aim of improving in-flight refuelling.
