PAFA Consulting Engineers
A KTP programme run by the University of Southampton and completed in 2005, saw the University's School of Engineering Sciences assist PAFA Consulting Engineers in devising a new technological solution to predict the effects of greenwater and wave bow slam action on ships that work in offshore oil and gas fields.
The outcome for the company included:
- A 22% increase in profits with a 2.5% increase in market share following this development
- An innovative computer-based design tool; useful to both designers and analysts working in the area
- Appointment of the KTP Associate within the company following the completion of the project
The KTP Associate, Dr Edward Ballard, presented his work at international meetings and conferences and one of his papers was awarded a bronze medal from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) as well as receiving the Institute's Samuel Baxter prize for the best paper on safety.
PAFA`s Managing Director, Dr Paul Frieze commented:-
"The KTP scheme was a cost-effective means of acquiring a new capability for PAFA Consulting Engineers that was at the forefront of technology. This has enabled the company to develop new markets and clients. Furthermore, the close working relationship that arose between the company and University personnel during the course of the scheme provided additional benefits in the form of access to other advanced technologies and assistance to develop small-scale software and related capabilities."
