Start-Up Application

Application process The process has two stages: Expression of interest and Award application.

The SETsquared Partnership team, the UCI and UCSD Global CONNECT teams will work to invite companies to bid in for the awards.

The applicant will first fill out an Expression of Interest Form which can be obtained from the local incubation or enterprise managers at each respective University or at the end of this document.

The completed Expression of Interest Form will need to be sent to the Programme Administrator Claire.Judd@setsquared.co.uk

With a completed Expression of Interest Form the local incubation or enterprise manager will work with the applicant to better understand what award is most suitable.  They will also pass the application through and initial assessment by the respective Universities Enterprise Director together with the Programme Director and a member of the US team.

Assuming that the application is to be moved forward, the applicant will then work with their incubation or enterprise manager to fill out either a more detailed Travel Award Form, Springboard Application Form (UK applicants only) or Bid Development Form.

The Travel Award Form will require a small amount of additional information regarding the specific trip and a clear statement of the objectives to be delivered during and from that trip.  The Travel Award Form is available from the local mangers, but only after an Expression of Interest Form has been completed and assessed. Final approval of a travel award will be made by the UK Programe Director, The Local Enterprise Director and a senior member of the US team (if the application is from the UK.

The Springboard Form will also require a small amount of additional information regarding the specific trip and a clear statement of the objectives to be delivered from the Springboard trip.  The Springboard Form is available from local mangers, but only after an Expression of Interest Form has been filled in and assessed. Final approval of a travel award will be made by the UK Programe Director, The Local Enterprise Director and a senior member of the US team.

The Bid Development Form will require more detailed information regarding the planned bid, the activities to be funded, or the proof-of-concept work planned. The Bid Development Forms will be available from the local research support team , but only after an Expression of Interest Form has been filled in and assessed.  Final assessment of the bid development award will be made by the sub theme steering group members, together with the UK programme director, the local Enterprise Director and a senior member of the US team.

Draw down of award funding and reporting

It will be the responsibility of the local managers to maintain a record of how the award progresses.  A set of deliverables will need to be agreed between the local managers and the successful applicant before any of the bid support funds can be accessed.  A Reporting Form has been developed for this part of the process.  It is designed for completion by the manager during or after a meeting with the award winner.

In the event of a successful application, a letter will be sent to the applicant communicating the award and explaining how to drawdown the funds.

In the case of a travel award the applicant will be expected to go ahead and make their own travel arrangements and then having agreed deliverables with the local manager invoice SETsquared for the £1,750 award.

In the case of a Springboard award SETsquared will cover the costs for the Springboard programme. An additional amount of £1,750 will be available to the award winner to cover travel, accommodation and subsistence for the trip to California.  The company will be expected to invoice SETsquared for this £1,750 once the Springboard has been arranged and a date agreed.

Bid development award are likely to be made available to the applicant on request, having agreed milestones and deliverables with the local manager.  It is likely that the deliverable and milestones agreed with the award will dictate that the award is drawn down in two or possibly three tranches.  Again the company will be expected to invoice SETsquared for each tranche of the award. Invoices will need to be made to:
