Applied Collaborative Research Application
Application process
The process has two stages: Expression of interest and Award application.
The SETsquared Partnership team, the UCI and UCSD technology transfer teams and the academics who participated in the May 2006 launch trip suggest that researchers should initially be invited to bid in for these awards. This is most likely to be encouraged through Heads of department, sub theme champions and tech transfer and research support teams.
The applicant will first fill out an Expression of Interest Form which will have to be signed by their Head of School. An Expression of Interest forms is appended to this document. Further information can be obtained from the local research support teams at each respective University.

The completed Expression of Interest Form sould be sent to the Programme Administrator Claire.Judd@setsquared.co.uk
With a completed Expression of Interest Form the local research support teams will work with the applicant in order to comprehend what award is most suitable. They will also pass the application through an initial assessment by the University's Enterprise Director together with the Programme Director and a member of the US team.
Assuming that the application is to be moved forward the applicant will then work with their research support team member to fill out either a more detailed Travel Award Form or a more detailed Bid Development Form.
The Travel Award Form will require a small amount of additional information regarding the specific trip and a clear statement of the objectives to be delivered during and from that trip. The Travel Award Form will be available from the research support teams, but only after an Expression of Interest Form has been filled in and assessed. Final approval of a travel award will be made by the UK Programe Director, The Local Enterprise Director and a senior member of the US team.
The Bid Development Form will require more detailed information regarding the planned bid, the activities to be funded, or the proof-of-concept work planned. The Bid Development Forms will be available from the local research support team, but only after an Expression of Interest Form has been filled in and assessed. Final assessment of the bid development award will be made by the sub theme steering group members, together with the UK programme director, the local Enterprise Director and a senior member of the US team.
Draw down of award funding and reporting It will be the responsibility of the local research support manager to maintain a record of how the award enables progresses. A set of milestones and deliverable will need to be agreed between the local research support manager and the successful applicant before any of the bid support funds can be accessed. A Reporting Form has been developed for this part of the process. It is designed for completion by the manager during or after a meeting with the award winner
In the event of a successful application, a letter will be sent to the applicant communicating the award and explaining how to drawdown the funds. In the case of a travel award the applicant will be expected to go ahead and make their own travel arrangements and then bill the £1,750 award through an expense code provided by their respective University finance department.
For bid development awards, half of the award will be made available to the applicant on request, having agreed milestones and deliverables with the local research support manager. A code will be created by the local finance department against which the applicant can drawdown funds. The second half of the award will be paid once a Reporting Form has been generated and agreed against initial milestones and deliverables.
