Professor Edge has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Bath since August 2003 and Deputy Director of the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control since 1992.
He undertook his first degree in Engineering at the University of Bath by following a thin sandwich programme combined with an engineering apprenticeship at Bristol Siddely Engines Ltd/Rolls Royce Ltd and on completion of his PhD at the University of Bath he was employed as a Senior Control Systems Engineer at Rolls Royce Ltd.
Phil Nelson
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Southampton, University Road, Highfield, Southampton, SO17 1BJ
A world expert in engineering acoustics, Professor Nelson has been Director of the internationally renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Southampton since 2001 and began his five-year term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Southampton on 1 September 2005 and will lead on research, enterprise, and human resources.
He has held a range of posts including Chair of ISVR's Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Group from 1992, and founding Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Noise in 1999 and his research contributions include work on sound generated by flow, active control of sound and vibration, acoustic source strength estimation and sound reproduction.
Barry G. Evans
Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise and Director of the Centre Communication Systems Research (CCSR), University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH
CCSR is the largest UK and European academic research group in Mobile and Satellite Communications. An extremely successful research centre with 40 research fellows and 100 + PhD students and a research turnover of £6.8m/year with a central role in the UK’s Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence, major participation in EU’s Framework Research Programmes and wide industrial collaborations and strategic alliances (including Nokia, Vodafone, Thales and Motorola)
Professor Evans was educated at the University of Leeds, obtaining BSc (1st Class Hons) and PhD degrees in 1965/8 respectively. He then joined the British Telecom sponsored team at the University of Essex (Lecturer-Reader 1968-83) where he was responsible for Telecommunications Systems post-graduate activities and radio and satellite research. He was also part-time consultant for Cable & Wireless in the 70/80’s.
In 1983 he was appointed to the Alex Harley Reeves Chair of Information Systems Engineering at the University of Surrey. He championed the idea of research centres and was founder Director of the Centre for Satellite Engineering Research in 1990. Having contributed to the successful spin-off of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, he moved on to become founder Director of CCSR in 1996 – a post he still holds. From 1999 to 2001 he was Dean of Engineering, moving to Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise in 2001 to date.
Outside of the University of Surrey, Professor Evans has been involved in the UK Foresight programmes in Communications and ITEC, EPSRC Strategic Advisory Committees, MoD-DSAC Committees, adviser to DG of OFTEL, board member of BNSC-TNAB as well as ITU, ETSI and EU Advisory Committees. He is currently a member of the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board and is Director of a small spin off company, Mulsys Ltd. He has recently been appointed to the Steering Council of the European Technology Platform – Integral Satcom Initiative and to the HEFCE Strategic Advisory Committee for Business and Community.
Professor Evans is editor of the International Journal of Satellite Communications and is author of over 500 papers in the technical literature and three books. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1991.
Malcolm Anderson

Malcolm Anderson was Head of the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol for nine years. He has held a number of overseas appointments, including two, twelve-month appointments as environmental research consultant to the US Corps of Engineers at Vicksburg, Mississippi and as senior consultant research geotechnical engineer to the Hong Kong government.
He is the author of over 120 papers and books, as well as industry standard software. He is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Hydrological Processes, which is published 20 times per year. He has worked with many government road-research departments worldwide, most notably in the Far East (Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia) and the Caribbean. He has acted as a consultant to major international engineering consultancy companies.
He is an elected Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and is currently technical adviser to the Poverty Reduction Fund in St Lucia, West Indies. He is a Council member of the Natural Environmental Research Council and a member of the NERC Council Audit Committee. Earlier in his career he was elected Quater Centenary Visiting Fellow at Emmanuel College Cambridge.
